Beta Glucans for the Win
Among fungi, Turkey Tail mushrooms are #1 when it comes to well-documented studies for immune activation and cancer aid. This is largely due to their high percentage of beta glucans - more than 50 percent.
Extensive research has resulted in much enthusiasm for turkey tail as it may help prevent & treat cancer, as well as combat viral infections, decrease inflammation, and combat a host of other ailments. (Christopher Hobbs, Medicinal Mushrooms).
Turkey tail is too leathery to use as food, but if you find it in the wild, you can add some to your soup stocks. Turkey tail has no deadly look-alikes, but the imitators lack the potent medicinal value. The key is the back side - it must have tiny pores, not be entirely smooth.
Double Extraction Method:
My method is a long soak in vodka followed by a simmer in water, then combining the two - this is a called a double extraction. The vodka content helps preserve the medicine, with the final water content less than 30%.
Through personal testing, I have found the medicine stays fresh in a cool, dark cabinet. As with all medicines, use when fresh for highest potency. (within six months) If planning to keep it longer, recommended to store it in the fridge.
Many double extractions are soaked for 6 weeks. I soak it for approximately 6 months for maximum effectiveness, and simmer during the full moon and/or eclipse.
